"I am giving the low star amount because I believe I was sent a knock-off of the real thing. Although it was new and packaged, as soon as I pulled off the wrapping I noticed it had a horrid smell. I've never smelled anything like it, so it's hard to describe. But it's terrible! Then I began reading it. The pages were faded in some spots, and there are very bad spelling errors throughout what I have read so far. I had to go to my college bookstore and buy a copy from them, and I compared the real one with whatever the heck was sent to me. I am attaching pics to show how bad it is. There are a lot more errors, I am just posting a couple. I am returning it immediately. It sounds like most people are getting the real deal, but do be aware that there are bad copies going around as well.

I just wanted to add that I am not talking about the errors that accompanied the first printing, this was supposedly a 7th printing with the "errors" fixed. This was a book that had clearly been badly re-typed by someone, as can be seen in the pics I included. This is a counterfeit product IMO."

• I purchased this from MagicBook1234...perhaps that should have been my first clue. However, I purchased from them because they had the best price and the reviews for the seller seemed to be good...then I started working on my paper and found GLARING issues with the spiral copy of the manual I received.
  
  There is no way this is the approved manual. Perhaps a first run or someone horribly plagiarized the book. Glaring issues are throughout. Ex on page 67 of the spiral book First sentence says "mtending" instead of intending. Same pg 1st sentence under section 3.08 states "only what needs to be said". This section starts with a lower case and it is not a complete sentence! Page 68 says "10-year-olc*" instead of 10-year-old. There are level 2 headings not bolded when most are. I could go on. Be cautious when purchasing.

• I'm working on my master's degree in Library and Information Science and APA is the preferred style for my program. I was required to purchase this manual for one of my intro classes and needed to cite it for assignments, otherwise I think I could have probably done without it. The reason is that there are many free online sources for APA style guidelines, my favorite being the Purdue OWL website. While this book is well formatted and clearly written, it is simply much easier and faster to search a website for answers to most formatting questions.
  
  The main benefit I see for owning this book is that it offers many excerpts of sample papers and reference pages. Many APA formatting samples are available online, but having this book to refer to takes away any doubt about the correct formatting. Other than that I don't see a lot of benefits to owning this book, other than that it goes into more detail about style rules than online sources. My biggest wish has been that the APA would publish a searchable version of their guide online; I would happily pay good money for the convenience!
• It's pretty comprehensive...has a lot of stuff about publication...and publishing...as well as the usual APA punctuation and grammar rules for the style.
  
  If your an undergrad student...this manual may be more than you're looking for when it comes to writing college papers.
  
  A lot of what this book has, and more, can be found on "Purdue dot edu" for free. And, it's comprehensive as well.
  
  If you're looking for a quick reference...I recommend APA The Easy Way by Houghton and Houghton. I have grown to appreciate it's simplistic approach to the APA basics .

• If you are a college student that is going to be writing APA style papers or you're a person that will be writing APA style papers this is the book that you need to have. This is what I consider to be the "bible" of APA style writing. Everything that you could ever need to know is covered in this manual which is written and published by the American Psychological Association, which is the association who sets out the guidelines for writing APA style papers. Owning this book will ensure that you do not have questions on paper set up, paper critique, and the all-important resources layout. So, if you are like me and you are one of the people that want to make sure that every APA paper that you write is 100% correct then you need to own this book and use it to its fullest. You will not be let down by any means. Also, I wanted to mention that you cannot beat the price for this book in hardcover!
  
  • side note, this is the most up-to-date American Psychological Association guideline book for writing APA style papers. As of 2018.
• What can I say? The APA is the APA, and if you're dealing with term papers, it's a must-have. I got the spiral version, which I strongly recommend, because it will lie flat while you search for the guidelines you need.
  
  My reason for rating it four stars rather than five is due to the way the APA organizes the guide, not due to the print or binding quality of the actual manual. I've used MLA as well as APA, and I find the index listings of the APA needlessly difficult and intuitively lacking. While it's true there are things we didn't need a few years ago (the various only citation guides, etc.) there's no real reason for the manual to be organized so you have to search for several terms before you find the right one (and sometimes you still don't find it). The earliest printing of this edition had errors in it (go figure!).
  
  As a university instructor, I think the manual could benefit from additional paragraph-length examples so students can see how a full paragraph would look with the various iterations of author and page citation criteria.
  
  In case anyone needs to know this - you can also find most (or all) of the manual on the APA website. Purdue OWL is, of course, a go-to site where we refer students, but I've learned it may not be as updated as we need.
  
  Have a strong pot of coffee or a glass of wine handy if you're using this style for the first time. It is what it is, and we have to live with it.

This volume opens with Mohandas Gandhi's arrival in Bombay in January 1915 and takes us through his epic struggles over the next three decades to deliver India from British rule, to forge harmonious relations between India's Hindu and Muslim populations, to end the pernicious Hindu practice of untouchability, and to develop India's economic and moral self-reliance. We see how in each of these campaigns, Gandhi adapted methods of nonviolence-strikes, marches, fasts-that successfully challenged British authority, religious orthodoxy, social customs, and would influence non-violent, revolutionary movements throughout the world. In reconstructing Gandhi's life and work, Ramachandra Guha has drawn on sixty different archival collections, the most significant among them, a previously unavailable collection of papers belonging to Gandhi himself. • It was fine.
• I can't compare this book to the multitude of other biographies written on Gandhi, as this is my first. At almost 900 pages of text and over 200 pages of ancillary material this is a monument for the ages. Ramachandra Guha is arguably one of the more important Indian historians of his generation in the estimation of many. He has combed through the massive volumes of Gandhi's writings, endless archives and newly available papers. His goal was nothing less than to document all of Gandhi's public and private life from his return to India in 1914 to his death in 1948.
  
  Gandhi's four interconnecting principles were to gain Indian independence, promote Hindu-Muslim unity, end untouchability, and achieve economic self reliance. To meet these goals Gandhi staged highly effective forms of political protest such as his march to the sea (in defiance of the British salt tax) and famed fasts (to stop interfaith violence). In the end foreign rule was overcome, but he was unable to prevent mass killings and partition of the subcontinent. His assassination by a Hindu nationalist would foretell of future troubles.
  
  Guha is an unabashed admirer of Gandhi, if not entirely uncritical of all he did. He sees Gandhi as the foremost figure in modern Indian history, and a highly influential figure across the world stage. This is not a difficult argument to make, and Guha does it with great conviction. The writing is fluid and unhindered by an overly academic style. The most obvious critique of his analysis is the representation of Gandhi as a liberal or even a radical. Gandhi was a reformer in many areas, but in most cases he was guided by conservative values and religious beliefs.
  
  Gandhi's rejection of western industrialism and embrace of agrarian decentralization now seem quaint and rooted in the 19th century. He was greatly influenced by Tolstoy's faith based pacifism, anti-colonialism and opposition to private land ownership. Homespun cloth and village councils were a challenge to British economic and political repression, but would not be the way of the future. In the debate with Ambedkar over the untouchables, Guha makes a different case than Arundhati Roy, who sees Gandhi as a reactionary on caste issues.
  
  Guha covers Gandhi's private life also, although somewhat superficially. In terms of an interesting psychological subject Gandhi ranks near the top. Oddly, he appears two dimensional and conventional in this portrait. Guha doesn't shy away from controversial aspects of Gandhi's celibacy experiments, such as sleeping naked with teenage relatives to test his purity. As with an extramarital dalliance with feminist Saraladevi Chaudhurani, Guha concludes nothing untoward occurred. Gandhi, both man and milieu, seem distant and difficult to fathom.
  
  Ultimately this book could have benefited from a shorter format and a more incisive look at Gandhi the politician. Guha proposes Gandhi as an antidote to the fundamentalism and intolerance that challenged India since the turn of the millennium. In doing so he sacrifices a level of insight into the traditionalist worldview Gandhi used to mobilize the rural masses. Although Guha notes the urban and middle class makeup of other nationalist and revolutionary groups, he doesn't see this as a significant lens to examine the social context of Gandhi's movement.
• In this much-anticipated second part of the biography, Guha provides a balanced, well-researched and thorough narrative of one of modern worlds greatest leaders. The sheer clarity with which Guha pens this narrative makes this 1000+ page (including almost 100 pages of index and another 90 pages on notes) tome read like a fast-paced novel.
  
  The book, however, is not a glorification - in fact, the balanced approach (clearly detailing the evolution of moral, religious and what now seems as completely strange beliefs) amplifies a reader's admiration of Gandhi's pursuit of self-improvement while simultaneously engaged in leading millions to self-rule.
  
  Perhaps the biggest contribution of this biography is 2 chapters in the first third of the book that provides a more detailed look at the personal evolution of Gandhi - particularly his views on religion and what one can glean from his own reactions to his serialized autobiography. The sections that discuss the environment leading to the independence, particularly the deepening sense of separatism and selfishness of leaders arguing for Pakistan will sadden anyone aware of the millions of lives lost and displaced in the partition. On a macro level, this is a book that is an excellent case study on political strategy - revolution v/s reactionary v/s incremental pragmatism.
  
  The factual narrative of each of the key events in each year, every key meeting, correspondence, fast, march, arrest, etc is in itself a fascinating and informative read. However, one also gets to appreciate the political genius of Gandhi (opportunism, perhaps in some cases and maybe even luck - such as Tilak's early death), organizational (Congress) machinations, and various tactics leaders adopt jostling for better positions in the party's platform. The genesis and crystallization of the Hindu-Muslim relation (or lack of it) that has defined much of the subcontinent's modern history is also clearly captured in this biography - albeit from the vantage point from Gandhi. Gandhi's attempts in forging (or forcing his view of amity) a Hindu-Muslim unity while challenging some of the then-systemic biases within Hinduism is also an informative read and provides a much richer context to appreciate and judge the current day politics. The range of reactions from various key leaders to Gandhi's efforts can still be seen in almost any discussion of the politics in the sub-continent.
  
  Just as in the first part of the biography, one gets to learn more about the personal side of Gandhi - particularly his relationship with his sons and wife, a bizarre experiment involving his grand-niece , and views on sexuality (none of which are candidates to deify Gandhi as a role model in family life). It is this astounding dichotomy of fighting for freedom for the masses but keeping the ones devoted to him in strict "Law Giver" mode that will puzzle readers. A reader also learns about the key roles of some of Gandhi's assistants and a host of influential leaders from various backgrounds that unfortunately never made it through popular recounting of India's independence struggle).
  
  For the casual reader of Indian history, the wide cast of characters and their import, will be difficult to follow along -
  However, as a remarkable study of an individuals evolution (moral, philosophical, political) and as a narrative on the most formative years of India, this biography is a must-read.

• Finished Heavy moments ago. I heard Kiese Laymon on NPR, and the second I heard he was from Mississippi, I pulled over and ordered, not only Heavy, but all of his books. I am so glad I was listening to NPR last week because I NEEDED this book in my life. As a Mississippian who left after college but whose family (including mom) still treads water in the state, this book gave voice to the pain, the struggles, the cycles of violence and desperation and waning hopelessness that influence just about every decision made by people in Mississippi. Many times I have been asked to describe the psychology of Mississippi and its people, but I could never explain it. Mr. Laymon captures that psychology and he paints literary pictures that are so real and so emotional that many times I had to take a break and remind myself to breathe because this book takes your breath away.
  The way in which he wrote this book to his mother, and started from his early childhood forward, created a crescendo of emotions. My heart rate increased as I moved along his life, and I kept thinking, "Oh no, something terrible will happen." Only to get to the end and realize the "something terrible" was the metamorphosis of the relationships between the characters -- Laymon and his mom, Laymon and his grandmother, Laymon and his body, which ingenuously is a prominent character of his memoir. There are so many layers to this memoir, and rarely do I read a book in two days only to sit down to read it again. Not only am I going to re-read this book, but I am going to have my husband, son and daughter read this book as they often ask about Mississippi and its influence on me as a woman, mom, etc.
  Poignant, personal, heavy. Deals with issues that are not fun but that are too common in so many of our lives and Laymon recounts these serious events and experiences honestly and yet respectfully (positive there is a better way to describe it). Who would I recommend read this book? Moms, sons, daughters and dads, people who deal with body issues, broken people, hurt people, the people who love broken and hurt people, anyone who wants more insight into the sustaining impact of racism, oppression, and America's unwillingness to confront the past in truth and frankness. Outstanding book.
• Heavy it is in more ways than one. Kiese Laymon’s intense memoir HEAVY AN AMERICAN MEMOIR. What the author started writing as a child sitting on his grammama’s front porch in Mississippi as a young boy, he finishes as an educated young man, sharing his deepest, darkest secrets, which he withheld from those he loved, unleashing them finally, with the hopes of not only becoming the writer he was meant to be, but to stop living lies that went back and forth between him and his mom.
  
  In the book, Kiese shares what it was like to grow up in a body he never felt comfortable in, going to school in the deep South, where racial inequality was still more than prevalent, it was a way of life that he had to survive on a daily basis, and where his mother loved him something fierce but her struggle also meant that her anger was not contained.
  
  Kiese writes with such depth, with such poetry, and there is a beautiful bond with his friends that will lift you right up. I love, love, love his way with words. Don’t read this book quickly as you are apt to miss something. And, savor everything that his grandmother has to say. She is as wise as they come.
• Heavy An American Memoir, by Kiese. Laymon (Scribner, 2018) is a complexly layered book. On its face it is the memories of a man who began his life as a poor child in Mississippi and how his experiences accumulated to make him the man, the author and the professor he is today. It is a journey in search of authentic love, authentic connections, authentic grasp of self in spite of the cultural and historic forces that would deprive him of all three.
  
  It is a brutal story. It is a tender story.
  
  A memoir is by definition a recounting of events the author lived through. It is told from the perspective of the author. In all human stories there are other people involved, other points of view, other memories of the same events seen through other eyes. Precisely because it is a memoir, a telling of the author’s experience, it must be taken seriously. In Laymon’s case I think it especially important to listen carefully and respect his voice, for it is the voice of one man who is part of a subset of Americans who are seldom taken seriously, seldom listened to carefully, seldom taken into account in the national conversation. Voices like Kiese Laymon are often dismissed, belittled, ignored.
  
  Some readers will be appalled at some of the experiences Laymon recounts. Others may dismiss events as exaggerated or from the past, things that wold not take place today. Others will read some parts of the book and walk away smug in their belief that Blacks are the architects of fractured Black families; there is nothing here that remotely supports such a reading of life in America—Black or white.
  
  Throughout the book Laymon is speaking to his mother, telling her his becoming. His experience is that none of the significant people in his life tell the truth about things that matter most deeply. (I intentionally am not providing any examples from the book I don’t know how to give examples here without taking away from the power of Laymon’s voice. I encourage—nay, urge—you to engage him unfiltered through a reviewer.) He openly struggles with understanding and telling the truth. His struggle is one with which anyone who has successfully transitioned from adolescence to adulthood can identify.
  
  I said earlier that this Memoir is a layered book. It is easy to see it as one man’s story. It is easy to begin to identify ones self in this story. It is less easy to see this story as an engagement of one man with main stream America. Somewhere in the last third of the book it dawned on me that the story can be read from the perspective that the author’s mother represents American culture, that she is a stand in for the ways the culture did and did not nurture him. There are no good words to describe how we are nurtured/formed, given a hand up or kicked down in American life by the systemic way the culture works. I know that American culture nurtured me differently from Keise Laymon simply because I come from an educated, privileged white family and Keise Laymon is a descendant of enslaved people. Even acquiring an education was more difficult for him than for me by an order of magnitude. The difficulty is the result of institutionalized white male supremacy fallacies, and privilege. It has nothing to do with any Black innate shortcoming. Race is a social construct; it has no basis in biology. If you doubt that assertion or are uncomfortable with it, then I urge you to read the scientific literature that is the basis for that statement. (Google “the biological basis of race” and read the first half dozen hits that come up. For starters.)
  
  Finally, the author has written a love letter to America. He is inviting all of us—privileged and ”other” (See Toni Morrison’s (The Origin of Other, Harvard University Press, 2017) to engage in a conversation about our shared 400 year history.
  And he invites a conversation about our shared future. This is a most timely, urgent conversation. Who are we? What kind of a people do we want to be? What choices can we make that will strengthen our chances of leaving a livable future for our children and grandchildren. What choices will foul the Eagles nest?
  
  I urge you to read this book during this holiday season, at least once, and to write your reactions to his Memoir and share it with someone important to you. Laymon is a voice to take seriously.

• This book is good. It’s one of those that leaves you in physical pain from the heartbreak but you love every page. This memoir tells the life from a black son to a black mother and it’s gorgeous. He ties in abuse and violence to his weight and how American violence reacts to black bodies. It wasn’t what I thought it would be when I picked it up but I’m glad because it was so much more. Every word had meaning.

• I bought this because my friend was going through the same ECT treatment. The writing is good, but I’m about to stop reading because of the incessant use of the F word. So unnecessary and off-putting.
• About 2 hours into reading this book I tasted my tears as they poured down down my cheeks- and it startled me. This book has been on my must read list for months, I was delighted to find it in my library and was looking forward to reading it. I had no idea that this was so much more than a story about treatment resistant depression. This is a really, really long love letter that Heather B. Armstrong writes not only to her mother, her 2 daughters, her doctors, but to herself. I did not put this book down, I could not put this book down. If you have ever loved someone who suffers from depression and want to catch a glimpse of their lives, you must read this book. If this procedure can do for others what it did for Ms. Armstrong, the lives of millions of people will be changed. Ms. Armstrong's words are like music, they grab your soul and become a part of you. 1979 forever!!!
• I’ve been reading Heather for god, 16 years now. Possibly longer. No one can describe being up shit creek like Heather, and make you laugh. With that said, this book made me cry, and laugh, hard. I’ve suffered from depression my whole life and having someone describe it so accurately was amazing good. Her journey was incredible and I hope that this treatment lasts for her and helps so many others. What stood out the most for me is her worry of her ex taking her kids away if she openly sought help. THIS IS REAL! Much love to you Heather for sharing your life as you have over the years. It’s made a lot of people happy. Much love to your amazing family and especially to your girls.
• I was going to email Heather and tell her the effect her book had on me after I devoured it in one sitting, but I figured if she can be brave enough to write about her depression in a book, I can be brave enough to leave a public review. My family has a long standing history with alcoholism, bipolar disorder and anxiety - the trifecta of mental health issues. Lately it’s been hard to want to do...anything. My GP has tweaked my meds time and time again and I’ve struggled to admit to myself that the cocktail I’m on just isn’t working.
  
  Heather’s book opened my eyes and validated what I was feeling - what others around me either couldn’t see or didn’t understand. Her bravery in taking such a phenomenal risk to climb out of the hole that is depression inspired me to shower, wash my hair for the first time in a week, put on makeup, and call my doctor for a referral to a psychiatrist. That might not sound like much to some, but to others suffering from mental health issues, and to Heather? They’ll understand just how much that is.
  
  Thank you, Heather, from the bottom of my heart. I am so happy for you, and so grateful for what you have written.
• When someone feels so bad, I mean the deepest, darkest kind of despair, but is willing to try anything to feel better because even though the alternative seems preferable, they truly want to find happiness and will go to extreme lengths to find a way to come through, that is strength. We’re talking ‘being dead’ in order to live. As in the most experimental of treatments where doctors put you in a series of chemically induced comas to simulate brain death, to hopefully eradicate treatment resistant depression. This is what Heather B. Armstrong did and lived to see the light of day in her compelling memoir THE VALEDICTORIAN OF BEING DEAD THE TRUE STORY OF DYING TEN TIMES TO LIVE. If you are expecting sadness and pure gloom, erase those thoughts. This book is the story of how one woman, recently divorced, raising two young daughters, learns how to ask for help, to help herself, as she shares her story with raw honesty, humor (yes), compassion, appreciation, and love for those around her.
  
  You will cheer every step of the way for Heather and for the dedicated and courageous medical community. THE VALEDICTORIAN OF BEING DEAD demonstrates what family is all about, it is about having compassion for others, and a first hand account of one brave woman saved by an extraordinary scientific breakthrough.
• I've been a follower of Armstrong's blog site (dooce) for a long time. She was one of the first bloggers to turn that platform into a career. Her writing has always been a mélange of sarcasm, sauciness, and passion. In other words, I've always loved the way Heather writes.
  That style doesn't work as well here--the "valedictorian of" motif gets tired rather quickly--but this is still a good read. Rather than parse each word to create a nuanced, metaphoric sense of what crushing depression feels like, she does something more clever she unpacks how she lives and links to how she presents to the world. In other words, that "lazy" parent who "always" has on "those" pants might well be struggling. Those elements of the book can only create empathy.
  More importantly, she delineates the many forms of stigma and how women--especially parents--are punished if they are forthright about their struggles. Rather than coming across whiney or entitled, she conveys her sense is of terror. Brilliantly.
• As the mother of an adult child who has struggled with depression for many years I was very interested in this treatment. My daughter has gone through extensive ECT treatments and has suffered terrible side effects. This has shown me there may eventually be another hope for her future.
• Emotional, absorbing and fascinating read. Beautifully written with enough humor for comic relief from all the heaviness. Highly recommended!
